Implementation of Converged Network and Security Infrastructure
With the FORTINET platform and SECUREWAY support, FIEB now has a secure network available for more than 2,000 simultaneous connections via wifi

Growth supported by technology
At the beginning of 2020, FIEB had a limited communications network that only allowed internet access for around 100 simultaneous users. Furthermore, it suffered failures such as service outages and slow performance in some applications. The institution realized that it was essential to offer great connectivity to the entire educational community to fulfill its objective of providing quality education. This became even more evident with the periods of lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic when the institution switched to virtual education mode.
The institution analyzed several proposals and concluded that Fortient provided some of the most suitable solutions for implementing a secure, stable, unified and highly available network. Therefore, it deployed FortiGate Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFWs) in 8 locations that support its communications infrastructure, with the support and experience of SECUREWAY, Fortinet’s local partner. “Fortinet provides us with a great cost-benefit solution to achieve the level of access we need”, says Humberto Vidal, IT coordinator at FIEB.
High reliability with Fortinet Secure SD-WAN
FIEB achieved unified network management, central control and complete network visibility thanks to the FortiManager solution. In real time and from a single console, the institution can analyze resource consumption and establish priorities according to its needs.
For example, although it does not prohibit platforms such as YouTube or social networks, which are used in the classroom, FIEB establishes limits to prioritize additional access to critical resources. This is also the case with Microsoft applications, such as Teams and OneDrive, which are increasingly used to take online tests. The same goes for the distance learning platform Moodle, which needs to always be available to students.
“The centralized management offered by FortiManager is useful for establishing rules across the entire network. In the past, users could easily change established security parameters and visit unauthorized sites. This is no longer possible as they have control over the entire traffic and configurations”, adds the coordinator.
Additionally, security and real-time incident logging and reporting capabilities have been added with FortiAnalyzer. This solution is useful for proactively preventing attacks and sending alerts when incidents occur, while assessing the impact and preventing information leaks or the presence of intruders on the network. FIEB can also use FortiAnalyzer to identify users who access torrent download services or programs, which can open doors to threats or, for example, the Tor browser.

Significant savings with better service
The implementation of Fortinet’s convergent network and security platform also allowed FIEB to optimize the use of resources and obtain better projections for future investments. “Fortinet Secure SDWAN technology allows us to acquire lower-cost links without degrading the quality of service”, highlights Vidal.
Likewise, the IT team can now serve a significantly greater number of users – from less than 2000 since the founding of FIEB, to 12000 in recent years. “With Fortinet, our team’s efforts can go further, as we can automate many things. This means we can maintain the same team and, at the same time, provide much better support to our educational community”, he concludes.
